Time for a vote on 081?

Hello all,
My time is limited over the next 4 days.  I'll try to keep up as good as possible.

As for 081, as I said before, I prefer it over 976.  The interior is newer.  The controls handle better to me. The radios are fair - not digital, and the top one is better than the bottom one.  Navs are ok.  Transponder as had intermittent issues in the past.  The paint really needs help though. Frost actually fills in the cracks and makes the surface smoother! haha.

But financial, I see where this is going.  Even though, 081 is more affordable right now, what do we do in a year and a half with the engine cost?  And I'm not willing to pay 8.5%.

As is, my vote is 'Nah'.  But only because I don't think we can be successful with the initial costs to the members.  We won't get enough support.

After this scenario runs it course as I see it happening (unless there turns out to be a big surprise), I'll make my last line proposal to keep this approach alive.  I can purchase 081 (or 976 if it's done right) and sell it back to the flying club.  I can "play the bank" (I'm really starting to dislike that phrase now).  I would like some help from one more of you (if possible) and the engine will be a whole other matter later.

I'm only throwing it out there as the last idea, so don't stop this just yet and don't mention it to Tim as an option.  Also, it would have to wait until May anyway.

Have a good weekend, and get up in the air and add some more hours to those planes!

Todd

I will send something out over the
weekend.  Probably no sense delaying the agony. I fear that the initial
$1450 will be a deal killer for most so I will try to frame it as a
hypothetical.

I did about a third of my primary
training in 081.  I have never had a problem with the radios except that
they are not digital – they are old style mechanical dials with no
flip-flop.  Don’t know about the IFR standing, but I’d would
expect a fresh IFR certification from Eagle.  VORs work fine.
I’ve never shot an approach in that aircraft.  I would not want to
do anything with the paint if it’s just faded and ugly (not worth putting
lipstick on that pig IMO).   If the paint is cracked or chipping,
then we’d be foolish not to paint.  Good question about the 10 year
time limit – don’t know.  It could be past TBO already.
Don’t know about the prop.  Mags are replaced relatively frequently,
are they not?  I thought I read somewhere that mags and vacuum pumps
should be changed every 100 hours, but that sounds excessive.  Don’t
know about the logs.  The interior was in better shape than 976 the last
time I flew it (which was before 976 got a new seat covers).  I’d
give it a 6-7 considering it’s a 35 year old plane.

Any of the concerns you raise could tip
the scales towards increasing our costs which already seem to be at or even
beyond our personal limits for this aircraft.  My decision making was
predicated on the terms set forth by Sean and Tim: $38K with 15% down financed
for 5 years at 8.5%.  At those terms I’d need to see at least 15
members to share the costs and make it worthwhile for me.  We can always
offer less for 081, but if we do we should probably be reasonably sure we want
to more forward if Eagle accepts the offer.

What does all of this add up to?
Some of us are right on the border of their price tolerance for 081 and some of
us are already past their tolerance.  Costs are more likely to go up than
go down before the end of the deal which will probably push some of us over our
tolerance.  In my estimation it doesn’t look like 081 is going to be
feasible.

Maybe. But I’m not very
comfortable with our numbers on 081. Does anyone know anything about the
radios? Is the aircraft up to IFR standards. VOR/ILS/LOC all work? What are we
going to do about the paint?  If the engine time is 1600 hrs, how many
years has it been since a major overhaul? (10 years is a time limit as well as
2000 hours.)  Was it a field overhaul or a factory remanufactured engine
1600 hrs ago? How much time on the prop?  When is the prod due for
overhaul ?  Is the prop serviceable or has it been refinished too many
times?  How much time on the mags?  When do they need overhaul again?
Are all the logs available?  What condition is the interior in?  Are
we willing to pay $38,000? Are we willing to put 15% down?  Are we willing
to finance for only 60 months?  Are we willing to pay 8.5% interest to
Eagle East?

So we’re not faring much better
than the 976 option.  In order for 081 to work for me we’d need to
recruit at least 15 members, and that doesn’t look likely.  With at
least 4 of the core members out, we’re also looking at possibly too few
people to run the club.  Do you think it’s worth reaching out to the
bigger group to see if there’s enough interest there?

So
far I’ve seen one yes (me) and one no (Bob McAloon).  Are we waiting
on any more information, or is it time to call in the votes on 081?  I for
one would like to know soon one way or the other whether this is going to be
feasible.
