From carlsonj at workingcode.com Thu Apr 30 17:05:15 2020 From: carlsonj at workingcode.com (James Carlson) Date: Thu, 30 Apr 2020 17:05:15 -0400 Subject: maintaining part 107 privileges Message-ID: <65184052-29e8-9b7a-eafd-848fa3d4b58f@workingcode.com> I hope all of you are well. As you know, you are required to have a knowledge exam within the previous 24 calendar months in order to exercise your 14 CFR Part 107 Commercial UAS Pilot privileges (107.65(b)). Because this involves a trip to a testing site, the COVID-19 crisis has made this difficult or impossible for many people. Yesterday, the FAA announced Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) 118, which is intended to provide some temporary relief from the rules. Under the SFAR, if you were still current in March, and you now need a recurrent exam any time between April and June, you can instead take a one-time on-line exam through the FAA Safety web site: https://www.faasafety.gov/ The course you need is ALC-515 "Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (small UAS) Recurrent." This is available ONLY if you do NOT have a Part 61 (manned aircraft) certificate. The following link should take you directly to the course: https://www.faasafety.gov/gslac/ALC/course_content.aspx?cID=515 After passing the test, you will be current for six calendar months. At that time, you will need to take the regular recurrent exam to maintain privileges. To review all of the details, see SFAR 118 (either link below) pages 28, 29, 81, and 82. https://www.faa.gov/coronavirus/regulatory_updates/media/FAA_SFAR_118_CoVid-19_Relief.pdf https://tinyurl.com/sfar118 If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. -- James Carlson 42.703N 71.076W
