They cover all sorts of topics related to air traffic control and communications. The episode I used for our meeting was OB385: https://opposingbases.libsyn.com/ob385-where-were-going-we-dont-need-victor-airways-1 The discussion I used as source material starts at 00:37:00 and runs to 00:59:45 in the on-line player; time codes might be a little different in a podcast player due to ad insertion or other minor editing changes. It's the main show topic contributed by SGAC Patron BD. You can listen on-line from any computer or device, or subscribe to the feed in your podcast player. Here's a link for Apple podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/opposing-bases-air-traffic-talk/id1330865695 Or just search for "Opposing Bases" in your favorite podcast app. (I use Overcast on iOS rather than the native app.) They'll be at Airventure on Saturday, July 26th at the AOPA Program Pavilion. https://events.rdmobile.com/Sessions/Details/2951673 I've been a listener and patron for several years now, and have contributed material a couple of times, such as a bit about ODPs in OB163: https://opposingbases.libsyn.com/ob163-can-you-see-me-now Every airport and other named entity gets a code name on the show, and listeners are referred to by initials just like controllers. I made up "Bread and Roses" for the Lawrence airport, based on the 1912 strike at the Everett Mill, across the river from the airport. One of the things I learned on the show is that for approach controllers, they enter a VFR request or pop-up as "callsign destination type altitude." So if you can say it in that order, it helps with the back-and-forth. -- James Carlson 42.703N 71.076W FN42lq08 From carlsonj at workingcode.com Tue Jun 17 23:54:06 2025 From: carlsonj at workingcode.com (James Carlson) Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2025 23:54:06 -0400 Subject: One extra link: IFR magazine article Message-ID: <9015ceba-fd2a-4447-a5cc-619dea28f328@workingcode.com> Thanks to Larry for reminding me that I'd left one item out of the follow-up links: https://ifr-magazine.com/uncategorized/thanked-spanked-or-dead/ That's an article from 2012 with some perspectives on the things that can go wrong, how you might consider dealing with them, and the grey areas in between. -- James Carlson 42.703N 71.076W FN42lq08
